Do veneers ruin your teeth?

 In Dental 359 Blog

No! Veneers definitely do not ruin your teeth! Well unless you have visited someone who does not know what they are doing.

When done well veneers are a beautiful restorative option which immediately improves the appearance of your smile.

With careful planning and skilled preparation (using the best techniques and a quality laboratory) there is no reason a veneer (or set of) should cause you, or your teeth any damage.

There are two main types of veneers

Porcelain veneers are made in a laboratory. As shown here a veneer simply bonds to the surface of the tooth. It is a thin shell of porcelain carefully crafted to blend and match the surrounding teeth.

Obviously, your dentist needs to prepare the tooth so they can bond the final veneer but they aren’t cutting away more tooth than they need to. Most dentists are quite conservative.

If you don’t want your tooth cut at all you could opt for the other kind of veneer, a resin veneer. This does not require any cutting at all. Rather, your dentist will add to the surface of the tooth to immediately change the appearance of said tooth.

The latter option is often more budget friendly for those not wanting to spend thousands or for those wanting to see what results are possible before having porcelain veneers fitted.

We have all heard horror stories of some poor patient who went to have veneers and things didn’t quite go to plan. If the dentist cuts away too much tooth and a veneer is no longer appropriate, they may prepare a crown instead. Obviously, this is not the preferred outcome so be sure you trust your dentist and have seen a portfolio of their work before committing to treatment.

Just to be clear, veneers do not ruin your teeth!

Poor dentistry can!

Check your dentist is qualified and experienced and if in doubt, don’t go ahead with treatment.

Veneers can look incredible when done well.

Here is a patient of Dr Hooman Golestani’s. After careful planning and meticulous preparation he achieved a lovely, natural result for this lucky patient. The possibilities are endless when you work with a highly skilled individual.
